Bordered by Ruskin Street and the Elwood Canal, this row of four townhouses addresses the site’s unique boundary conditions. The project provides a sensitive model of densification in a suburban context, providing low impact living with an embedded and tangible sustainability overlay.
The scale, setback and materiality of Ruskin Street sit within its domestic context, while the northern interface offers an open connection with the canal edge. Along the southern boundary is a permeable laneway, planted with canopy trees and providing functional pedestrian access to the residences.
The project employs a range of active shading measures including, deep northern eaves, operable external blinds to the large balcony decks and can function on 100 per cent renewable energy through a photovoltaic solar system and Tesla battery wall. The building’s onsite grey water and rainwater collection feed both toilets and irrigated native planting.
