Fieldwork was engaged, in collaboration with landscape architecture practice Mala, to lead the masterplan redevelopment of a large greenfield site on Dja Dja Wurrung Country. Working closely with project partners DJAARA, the masterplan seeks to revitalise a damaged landscape, with the overarching ambition to ‘Heal Country’.
The site is located on contaminated land, a legacy of its post-colonial history as a mining site. Through a series of Wartakas, collaborative working groups with Djaara community members, a masterplan for approximately 250–300 townhouses was developed. The site’s existing waterway has emerged as a central organising element. The proposal regenerates the waterway through native planting and the creation of communal spaces along its banks, establishing it as the landscape and community heart of the masterplan.
The site’s topography informs the proposed road network and arrangement of dwellings, with northern and southern neighbourhoods connected by, and organised around, the central waterway. Slow-traffic measures and pockets of green space are woven throughout the masterplan, helping to create a safe and welcoming new neighbourhood.
